Rifugio Ca' Runcasch Alpe Campagneda 23020 LANZADA (Sondrio) Italy

The Rifugio C Runcasch gets its name from the old Runcasch hut, once a shelter for local shepherds, who in summertime would take their herds to alpine pastures in the area. ' Runcasch ' comes from the local dialect for the rock grouse, which was once very common in this region.
Construction of the building began in July 1999 and was completed in autunn 2001. The rifugio is situated on the scenic plain of Campagneda, just above a group of shepherds huts, at an altitude of 2170m. The location is bathed in sunshine and is blessed with particular beauty.
On the flanks of the plain are two sentinels - Pizzo Scalino 3323m to one side, and the towering Cima Sasso Moro 3300m to the other. At a small distance from the rifugio are several small alpine lakes to the Campagneda Pass, which in turn leads to the wiss border - providing access to the town of Poschiavo and Bernina Pass.
The pasture of Campagneda is still used in summertime, when hundreds of cows feed on the rich alpine grasses, ultimately furnishing our tables with fresh butter and tasty cheeses. In winter the area is a haven for alpine and cross-country skiers, as well as trekkers and lovers of mountain scenery - all with the common goal of being at one with the mountains.
FEATURES C Runcasch provides the services of a small hotel. The fare is traditional, homecooked local dishes, accompanied by wines from the Valtellina and beyond, as well as (strictly local) grappa and 'amari'. Rooms cater for two or four people and are heated during the winter season, each with private bathroom with shower. Maximum capacity is approximately 50/60 people.
OPENING TIMES Weekends and public holidays from 26.12 until 06.01. All week until 28.02 Summertime - open daily from 15.06 until 15.09. Weather permitting, the rifugio will remain open on weekends until the end of October. NB: Advance bookings are essencial for accomodation on weekdays during autumn, winter and spring.
